Support National Nest Box Week with Weston Sawmill

National Nest Box Week encourages bird lovers to put up their nest boxes to support the conservation of breeding birds. Valentine’s Day marks the start of this very special campaign in the ornithological calendar.

The campaign is supported by wildlife TV Presenter Nick Baker, who said,
“I can’t think of a more satisfying way to spend an afternoon than adding something (to your garden) that will help our wildlife for years.”

Weston Sawmill’s most popular type of bird box has a small entrance hole which is a favourite for species like Blue Tits, Nuthatch, Pied Flycatcher and Tree Sparrows.
Bird boxes aren’t a one size fits all, with different species’ choosing all shapes and sizes dependant on their size and diet.

Maintenance Tips for Bird Box Care

The two biggest hallmarks of a top quality bird box are providing shelter and security, and given that it will be exposed to the elements, we would recommend using a water-preservative for cleaning.
One of the reasons National Nest Box Week launches in mid-February is to give them a chance to bed in before the new breeding season starts in Spring, when birds begin their courtships.
Having said this, there’s never a bad time to add a bird box to your garden, as birds are searching all year round for suitable nesting sites. Boxes discovered in Autumn or Winter can be used as roosting havens.
